Sadly, I did not have a charming british lad whisk me around on a romantic european getaway for Valentine's. Oh well, I have only been here for 2 weeks; however it feels like longer. I am finally starting to get used to things and figured out all the different coins. They have coins for everything! (£2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p, 1p) It is so weird paying for whole meals with coins.
Since I haven't updated since Tuesday let me tell you about the rest of my classes. Wednesday I had Operations Analysis which is basically how to run a restaurant. We have a group project throughout the semester where we will be running our own restaurant. The professor is absolutely hilarious and I have a feeling it is going to be my favorite class. The only downside the class is from 9a-12p, waay to early. Thursday I have 2 classes one from 9a-12p and the second one from 1p-4p. The first class is Sustainable Tourism and it is exactly how it sounds: sustainable tourism, keeping tourism going even with all the natural and economical things going on in the world. My 2nd class of the day is Managing People in Context which is basically like an HR class. Thursday is definitely the worst day but luckily it's my last school day of the week.
Let's see... Friday night I went out with my flatmates and their friends to the club on campus, Rubixx, but it is called Flirt! on Fridays. That was a lot of fun and they played a lot of good music. Found a new song: "Bonkers" by Dizzee Rascal, very catchy. I did the british thing though, I wore a dress out in the 40 degree weather, but the club itself is warm and luckily it's on campus and about a 3 min walk from my court. I really enjoy having a club on campus, just have to remember to get my ticket on Monday's before they are sold out. They go on sale Monday morning and are usually sold out by Monday at noon!
So after a night out I woke up early on Saturday morning and headed to London. We took the train from Guildford to Waterloo then quickly figured out the underground to get to Hyde Park where there was a FREE walking tour.
The walking tour was from 11a-1p and it took us to Buckingham > St. James > Westminster Abby > Clock Tower/Parliament. Our tour guide, Smith, was very funny and made the tour interesting. [I highly reccomend these tours through "Sandeman's newEurope" ] And we got to Buckingham just in time for the changing of the guards and it was packed outside so we didn't get a close view but we did our best!
It was sooo unbelieveable to finally be standing where I have been dreaming of for the longest time. The clock tower was a lot smaller than I imagined but still incredible. After the tour we went to a chic pub called VERVE where we had lunch and received 25% off our bill because we were a part of this walking tour. I had the classic fish & chips which was absolutely delicious.
After lunch we headed over to the shopping district at Oxford St. to check out a few stores, but mainly hit up Primark. Primark was a madhouse! The store is 2 levels and everything is very reasonably priced but the place was packed so it was frustrating but I did pick up a few cute items. Including a bag for only £4! After that we stopped to relax and grab a coffee. Sadly everything closes early in London so we didn't get much else in but we are planning a trip back soon to do more tours and museums. But we did get to do one more touristy thing which was hit up King Cross Station to go take a photo at platform 9 3/4 where Harry Potter gets the train to Hogwarts.
Finally, after a long day we took the underground back to Waterloo to catch the train back to Guildford. Exhausted, I took a night to myself and stayed in and watched movies. Then today I went into town to get some groceries for the week and then finally did Laundry, wasn't as confusing as I thought it was but it did take 2 hours, & it did not help that the laundry room was freezing!
Luckily, tomorrow is Monday, President's Day in the US but obviously here in the UK they do not celebrate that so school and work must go on. However, I do not have lecture on Monday anyways. But Tuesday is pancake Tuesday so we are possibly going to make pancakes to celebrate! (just have to figure out how) And we also want to check out the T.G.I. Friday's in town at some point.
That is everything for now so stay tuned for where my next adventure will take place.
Cheers oxo
